Epigenetic changes in myeloid cells control the damage response in response to myocardial ischemia

Aging and HFpEF worsen cardiac recovery after myocardial infarction (MI), partly through leukocyte-driven inflammation. Epigenetic alterations in leukocytes, including changes in DNA methylation and histone modifications, contribute to immunosenescence and chronic inflammation. We will map epigenetic and spatial changes in cardiac leukocytes, characterize inflammation and fibrosis, and test anti-inflammatory and epigenetic therapies in murine models. Findings will be validated in human patients to identify targets for improving post-MI recovery in aging and HFpEF.
