Pericytes and perivascular fibroblasts in the control of cerebral damage

The regeneration of stromal tissue in the brain is essential for healing after stroke. We have found that after stroke, pericytes and perivascular fibroblasts undergo a variety of activation-induced changes that drive angiogenesis and fibrosis. The lasting impact of acute damage on revascularized tissue post stroke will be addressed with respect to stromal tissue organization and function, to improve regeneration. Additionally, we will investigate whether previously activated cells retain a memory of injury, possibly induced by epigenetic reprogramming, leading to an altered damage response in recurrent stroke.
